What is a IP Rating?, What is IP67?

What Does “IP Rating” Mean?

IP stands for Ingress Protection — which is just a fancy way of saying how well something is protected from dust and water getting inside.

The IP rating always has two numbers after it — for example, IP67 or IP54.

  • The first number tells you how much dust or dirt it can keep out.

  • The second number tells you how much water it can handle.

Here’s How It Works:

RatingWhat it Means for DustWhat it Means for Water
0No protection at allNo protection at all
1–2Protected from big bits of dirtProtected from light drips or splashes
3–4Protected from most dustProtected from rain or light spray
5–6Almost or completely dustproofProtected from strong jets of water
7–8Completely dustproof

Can be dropped or used underwater for a short time (IP67) or even deeper (IP68)

IP67 is a rating that tells you how well something is protected from dust and water.

  • The “6” means it’s completely dustproof — no dust or dirt can get inside at all.

  • The “7” rating means it’s waterproof for a short time — you can drop it in water up to 1 metre deep for about 30 minutes, and it will still function properly.

If a radio or phone is IP67 (As the SpeedTech Driver to Crew radios are rated), it means it’s tough enough to withstand dust, rain, or even a brief dunk in water — perfect for outdoor use.
