Plugs and Pinouts
Understanding Plugs and Connectors in Motorsport Radios
In motorsport, not all radios and headsets use the same type of plug or connector. While it would make life easier if everyone followed one standard, that’s not the case — especially when it comes to helmet headsets.
IMSA Standard (Used in Circuit Racing)
The IMSA standard is the official, internationally recognised option. It’s the most widely used, most reliable, and usually the most cost-effective. At SpeedTech, this is the standard we recommend and supply the most.
Off-Road Racing “Blue Plug” Standard
In the Off-Road racing world, many competitors use a different system, often influenced by brands like Rugged Radio. These connectors are easy to spot because they are blue in colour. Although they resemble IMSA plugs, the wiring is different, so they are not interchangeable. SpeedTech also stocks this Off-Road “Blue Plug” hardware if you need it.
Stereo versus Mono
Often, when it comes to headsets or earplugs, you will be asked to choose whether you require stereo or Mono. We have created an information page to help make this process easier for you. To be redirected to the page, Click Here.
Radio Connectors
To connect your headset or harness to the radio itself, there are also a few standards. The most common type in motorsport is the K-plug or connector (also known as the Kenwood connector). Kenwood first developed it, but most radio brands use it today.
Some harnesses also require a jumper cable. This lead connects your radio harness to your specific make and model of radio. These typically use a 5-pin Mini XLR plug.
